Is your stiff
and painful hip putting a hitch in your
step or keeping you from living life to the fullest?
A new take on an old procedure could help put you
back in the game of life faster than ever and with fewer
complications.
The anterior approach to hip replacement surgery is a
minimally invasive approach to the standard hip replace-
ment surgery. While it is not a new procedure, having
been performed since the early 1980s, smaller incisions
and modern, specialized instruments have made this
surgery even less difficult for patients than before.
How does it work
“The hip joint is located
deep within the body, beneath muscles and tendons,”
says Vahan Cepkinian, MD, orthopedic surgeon at
Glendale Adventist Medical Center (GAMC). “During
traditional (posterior) hip replacement surgery, the
muscle of the hip must be cut and then reattached.
Using the anterior approach allows us to work between
the muscle, allowing for a quicker recovery and
rehabilitation.”
Just like with traditional joint replacement, the joint’s
cartilage and bone are replaced with implants during the
anterior approach procedure, creating a new joint that
moves smoothly and painlessly.
GAMC’s experienced orthopedic surgeons have been
performing the anterior approach to hip replacement
for many years. In addition, GAMC is certified in hip
and knee replacement by The Joint Commission, which
means that the hospital has met the highest standards
of care for orthopedic patients.
Noticeable benefits
With this minimally invasive
surgery, people may experience benefits over other
approaches, including:
●
A smaller incision
●
Less operating time
●
No movement restrictions and minimal risk of dislo-
cation after the procedure
●
Faster recovery time
“The anterior approach is particularly appropri-
ate for patients who are active and eager to return
New life
for your hips
to work and their daily activities as soon as possible,”
Dr. Cepkinian says.
