F
or many of us, knee pain may keep us from doing
the things we love or make our everyday activities
di cult.
Some might be considering knee
surgery—or know someone considering knee
replacement—but are concerned about having major
surgery and the long recovery that follows.
First of all, you’re not alone.
“Almost million people in the U.S. su er from knee pain caused by
osteoarthritis,” says Philip O. Merritt, MD, medical director of the Ortho-
pedic Center at Glendale Adventist Medical Center (GAMC). “Many of
them are looking for less invasive alternatives to total knee replacement.”
A NEW OPTION
MAKOplasty partial knee resurfacing, available at
GAMC’s Orthopedic Center, is an innovative treatment option for adults
living with early to midstage osteoarthritis in the knee. It is a less invasive
alternative to total knee replacement. e procedure is powered by the
RIO Robotic Arm Interactive Orthopedic System, developed by MAKO
Surgical Corp. Published medical studies have shown that the RIO
System allows greater precision in performing partial knee resurfacing.
“ e procedure particularly bene ts those who need knee surgery
but may not be candidates for total knee replacement surgery,” explains
Dr. Merritt. “Patients who wish to have less invasive surgery, reduced
pain and quicker recovery may bene t from MAKOplasty.”
rough the use of robotic arm technology, GAMC surgeons precisely
target the diseased portion of the knee without a ecting the healthy
bone and tissue surrounding it. An implant is then placed on the joint
to allow the knee to move smoothly again.
HOW IT HELPS
Some of the bene ts of MAKOplasty partial knee
resurfacing include:
A quicker return to full activities
Optimal implant positioning using robotic technology, which results
in a more natural-feeling knee following surgery
