GET HEALTHY
TOGETHER
Habits can be contagious
YOU SHARE DINNER
with your kids, TV time with
your spouse and lunches out with co-workers. And with-
out realizing it, you may be sharing your health (or lack
thereof ) with those close to you.
Research suggests that the habits—whether healthy
or unhealthy—of those around us can in uence our own
habits. And our choices, including the foods we eat and
the way we spend our free time, are likely to have an im-
pact on our friends and loved ones as well.
So why not make sure the habits you’re sharing will
bene t everyone in your circle of health? To get started,
try these ideas:
Band together to shed unwanted pounds.
Arrange
a friendly weight-loss competition at work, or enlist the
help of a close friend and keep daily food journals. Shar-
ing information can help you both stay accountable for
your food choices.
Create a healthy food test.
Challenge yourself or
your spouse at family meals to come up with menus that
are both healthy and satisfying. Dare your kids to pick a
healthy side dish that is nutritious and ful lling—if they
choose it, they’ll most likely eat it. Share meal and recipe
ideas with friends. Come up with a list of healthy snacks
to have on game nights instead of pizza and soda. Share
your recipes at

.
Make exercise a team effort.
Make exercise dates
with a friend or your spouse or kids. You’ll be able to
enjoy each other’s company and improve your health at
the same time. And let’s face it, we’re all much less likely
to blow o a workout if someone is waiting on us.

RESIDENCY PROGRAM DRAWS TOP DOCTORS
Family medicine stresses the importance of healthy
living and disease prevention. Family medicine physicians
look a er the health of an entire family—from children to
adults. Family medicine doctors can treat almost anyone,
but recent studies have revealed a shortage of doctors in
this specialty in today’s health care system.
A REPUTATION FOR EXCELLENCE
GAMC’s Fam-
ily Medicine Residency Program attracts doctors from
across America and the world. e qualities that draw
residents to the program mirror the qualities that pa-
tients see at the hospital: a long-standing reputation for
exemplary patient-centered care and a sizable range of
inpatient and outpatient services.
“Beyond the hospital setting, our program is commit-
ted to community service, with rotations in local health
centers and underserved areas,” says Janet Cunningham,
MD, program director. “Residents participate in com-
munity health fairs, homeless shelters, school programs
and free clinics—and we are team physicians for Glendale
Community College athletes.”
MAKE IT YOUR MEDICAL HOME
Under the guidance
of GAMC board-certi ed faculty physicians, residents
conduct o ce hours at the Family Medicine Center at
S. Chevy Chase Drive. ere they treat approximately
,
patients each month while also completing super-
vised rotations in the hospital.
e Family Medicine Center is one of the rst medical
practices in this area certi ed as a patient-centered medi-
cal home, which means that it focuses on comprehensive
behavioral health and health care management.
e doctors in the Family Medicine Residency Program
can see new patients Monday through Wednesday from
a.m. to p.m., ursday from a.m. to : p.m., and
Friday from a.m. to noon. Like GAMC, the doctors ac-
cept most medical insurance plans.

Kick the habit collectively.
It can be extremely di -
cult to quit smoking if those around you are still lighting
up. Recruit your smoking buddies to set a group quit
date. You can call each other when cravings kick in,
and you can share the coping strategies that keep you
from lighting up.
